Digital's Growing
Sodwana Bay Underwater Photo Shootout 2003 saw the digital category grow more than any other.

Photographer:David Gray - Winner of Digital Category

The 'standard' digital section was won by David Gray, and this year the competition was fierce. This category only allows entries taken with a digital camera. The quality of these entries was excellent. Obviously UW digital equipment is catching up with photographer's expectations at last.

The Creative Digital category allows entrants to use both digital scans of slides and/or images captured with digital cameras. Entrants are entitled to fiddle in the digital darkroom to the hearts content - except of course that this is a Shootout and time is limited.

The Sport of it.
Every year I'm enthralled by the courage of all the entrants to this competition. Pro's and beginners line up to take a a chance with just two rolls of film and 4 or 5 dives. They choose two favorite images and display them to be judged by all. Disappointment and even embarrassment is a risk for everyone, but they do it anyway.

For 2003, my favorite story was the one about Chris Reilly.

Chris Reilly of SAPhoto Magazine

Chris served the Sodwana Shootout last year as a competition judge. As accomplished photographer and editor of SA Photo Digital & Video magazine, he's well qualified to judge any image on both technical & creative criteria. Thing was, he'd never dived before.

And then, there he was, just qualifying as Open Water 1 diver when Shootout 2003 started, ready to enter! I am happy to report that Chris is apparently crazy about  diving and his entries weren't too shabby at all. Having so little diving experience, Chris was allowed to enter the Intermediate Category, so you can see his pics there.

Sodwana Shootout 2003

Very sad news
Lyn de Lacy Smith, was an ardent supporter of the Sodwana Shootout Competition. As judge, and sponsor of the competition, she is owed all our thanks. Sadly Lyn passed away on 6th August. Our deepest sympathies go to all who miss her. There are so many of us.
Bits and pieces
* Jenny-Lynn & Dave Gray travelled from Tibet to compete in the shootout!
* Howard Godfrey drove up from the Eastern Cape on his own. He commented on the friendliness of other competitors.
* Fiona McIntosh was a sporting competitor and a ray of sunshine from Divestyle Magazine.
* Heather Beattie of Coral Divers was an absolute gem. Thank you from all organisers & competitors.
* Gotta thank the people who helped with our presentation nightmares: Jeanne Liebetrau, Rod & Debz Oscroft, and Greg de Valle.
The Sodwana Shootout is hosted by Coral Divers and Sodwana Bay Lodge & Scuba Center.
The competition and sponsorship is organised by the Gauteng Underwater Photographic Society and Rover Media Productions
